(3/1/14: Looking for Smileys for a Ning 3.0 network? Go here: http://jqueryhelp.ning.com/forum/topics/smileys-for-ning-3-0-beta-f... )

(7/25/11: There is a Unbranded Version that does not mention jQueryHelp.ning.com available for a Donation of $15 or more.  If you want it, message me!)

-------------------------------------------

NOTE - This code is for Ning 2.0 sites!  The code for Ning 3.0 sites is here:

http://jqueryhelp.ning.com/forum/topics/smileys-for-ning-3-0-beta-f...

-------------------------------------------

Ning has changed the Text Editor that they provide for all of our Ning Networks.  My Smileys version 4 and 5 do not work correctly with the new Text Editor.  With versions 4 and 5, you can no longer click the Smileys to get them to appear in the textbox. So I have written Version 6A which is meant to work with the new Text Editor.  in 6A you CAN click the Smileys and they will go into the textbox when the text editor is in Visual Mode but NOT in HTML mode.

This version does NOT convert Smiley codes entered in the textbox into Smiley images and does NOT convert Smiley codes in older comments and replies into Smiley images.  Versions 4 and 5 did that, but they could CAUSE PROBLEMS with the editor so I suggest you upgrade to 6.

I may try to add the ability to convert codes to images in future upgrades to version 6.

We are using Smileys 6A here now.  Try it out!

Here is the code for Smileys 6A, use it on your site if you want, and AT YOUR OWN RISK!  If you ever notice any problems on your site, REMOVE THIS AND OTHER JS from your Custom Code / Analytics textbox to see if the code is causing your problems.

NOTE:  This code goes in your Custom Code (also know as Analytics) textbox.

Make sure you DO NOT put it inside any other script tags.  If you do, then the "more" button will not work and it may affect other code as well.  It is also a good idea to make a copy of your custom code before editing it.  Copy it to a text file in Notepad if you're on Windows.

Here is the code!

<!-- Setup file for More Smileys - Add your own custom Smileys -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://api.ning.com:80/files/dA0WF0z08cJc9DYUxlB0ieJWKmRGequtxn3-nUAaAVkul9r0yZetwHPAzKERw*GV5j77mp9WIh41TM2m80AQDSjNVfm0SeU4/ZMoreSmileyData.js"></script>
<!-- Smileys 6A - from jQueryHelp.ning.com - DO NOT DELETE THIS! -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://api.ning.com:80/files/dA0WF0z08cKNJHzaNpjPqYkXzSFQYvg2MpX8yXkYzC1CfPmAteWsm1s8gJVQA3TfBqpihLxzro1t6T*BnAjBnKCURmbSChcj/SmileyTest6A.js"></script>

Make sure there are no spaces in those long file names starting with api.ning.com:80/files... Try this older version if the above does not work for you.

<!-- Setup file for More Smileys - Add your own custom Smileys -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.bkserv3.net/jQueryHelp/js/ZMoreSmileyData.js"></script>
<!-- Smileys 6A - from jQueryHelp.ning.com - DO NOT DELETE THIS! -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.bkserv3.net/jQueryHelp/js/SmileyTest6A.js"></script>

Want to use your own Smileys?  Read this:

http://jqueryhelp.ning.com/forum/topics/try-smileys-20?id=2818000%3...

4 built in Smiles work but "more" button doesn't work?  The code is probably inside another script tag.  Check your code.  This has been reported a few times, see here for one example:

http://jqueryhelp.ning.com/forum/topics/try-smileys-version-6-for-t...

Getting a "This image is down" error, or "Look Who's Popular" image?  Read this:

Looks like you may be having the same Photobucket issue that people were having last year.  Check this discussion and see if the code there helps: http://jqueryhelp.ning.com/forum/topics/ning-3-0-emoticons

Best wishes!

@T.J:  My smiley codes are broken on my 2.0.  Below is a snippet.  I noticed it earlier today but wanted to give it some time to clear up - and has not as of yet.  I already have the 3.0 code on my 3.0.  I am going to migrate all at once when Ning has us all migrate at the same time.

Whoops, forgot the snippet:

Hi TJ,

I have noticed that the smileys app has been missing from or site for a few days now, but you still have it here. I saw it missing on some other sites also. It seemed to happen about the time Ning was on one of thier 500 error binges. Any ideas on that?

Thanks for the report!

I was just able to add a comment with a smiley, here: http://powerofblessings.ning.com/group/today-s-inspiration-jan-22/f...

Might have been a temporary glitch because one of the files from the smiley app is stored on Ning and may have been affected by Ning problems as you mentioned.

Please let me know if the issue continues for you and I'll see what I can do to help.

Best wishes!

TJ

Hi TJ,

They are back now, but they had been out since Wed. or Thursday I think. I had done a little more trouble shooting. I had pasted this link in my browser address bar:

http://www.bkserv3.net/jQueryHelp/js/SmileyTest6A.js

I got a "Bandwidth Exceeded" message from bkserve3.net. They are probably back now because today is the 1st & the bandwidth quota started over. Thought you might want to know that.

Thanks!

Thanks for this very helpful information! I did move bkserv3.net to a smaller server, so that is probably why you saw this issue.  I just uploaded the SmileyTest6A.js file to Ning, and it would probably be best to use that file rather than the version on bkserv3.net.  Try it and see how it works for you.  Or upload it on your site and use that version.

The file is now at

http  ://api.ning.com:80/files/dA0WF0z08cKNJHzaNpjPqYkXzSFQYvg2MpX8yXkYzC1CfPmAteWsm1s8gJVQA3TfBqpihLxzro1t6T*BnAjBnKCURmbSChcj/SmileyTest6A.js

Note that I had to put a space after gttp for it to show here properly, so take out the space!

and you can download it from the attached file below, and then upload it to your own site.

Thanks again for your feedback!

Hi TJ,

I went ahead & downloaded the .js file, uploaded it to a blog on the site & replaced the link to it in the Custom Code. Working great!

Thanks for the help!

Great!  Glad to hear all is well!

My smilies are giving me an error picture that says you need to update your 3rd party hosting thing from Photobucket. Apparently they have a policy now that you can't share to other sites for free. You have to upgrade your account.  (I think. I may be wrong.)
