 I have asked the same question on NC, from what I gather on what I was told, was that it was very difficult to do, and it takes a lot of code to accomplish. I wanted that exact same thing for my site as well. It actually looks a lot easier to have it in tabs like that, than what we have now.

Our friend Vaqz has provided a tutorial of one way to do tabs, here:

I would make a few little changes to his approach to make it a little more efficient, but its pretty good as he has presented it.  Have a look!

Vaqz does this by using a jquery tools library that does 4 things, one of which is the tabs. That tools library is 103K in size, not HUGE but still rather Big. It is served from the website that created these tools which is a free site which seems to have no income other than donations.

I might make these changes to the javascript code:

OK, first of all, he is using the OLD version. The jquerytools site says to use 1.2.7 and vaqz is using 1.2.6.

Second, people should probably use the jquerytools version with JUST the tabs functionality, why have the other things's code if not being used, and why have another version of the entire jQuery library since Ning already loads that for us. So I would use the code version which is TINY - 2.7K :-)

Finally, I might host the jquerytools code on Ning or on an external server, who knows how long jquerytools will be online and who knows how reliable their server is.

I hope this gives you some ideas on how to improve the tabs code vaqz so kindly provided.  If you need further help, I am available for hire.

Thanks!

Some notes on the tabs -

If you are putting the tabs code in the textbox where you want the tabs to appear, then you do need to include the jquery library as part of the jquerytools library.  Ning loads textboxes before it loads jquery, so jquery code in textboxes needs the jquery library to be loaded from the textboxes, at least in my recent experience.

I'm working with another developer on some tabs code so I won't be giving anything away here, or writing any custom tabs code.  But it should be possible to put tabs in Groups too.

Here's an outline of how to do it: Place the modules you want as tabbed content under the textbox with the tabs code.  Pick any unique class name you want and add that class to the modules that will be the tabbed content with a line like this for each module:

$('#AModule').addClass('UniqueClass');  find the id of each module that is going to be a tab, using FireBug.

then bring in the jquerytools tabs library with this line:

$("ul.tabs").tabs(".UniqueClass");

The rest is the same as Vaqz' code - just modify the <li tags with the text you want for each tab.

I never even thought about a tab container for groups. Damn that would be swell. The default group layouts can't be changed directly. Perhaps this is why Ning 3 is so easy to manipulate as far as layouts goes, I spend a lot of time figuring out ways to overcome layout challenges in 2.0. Pretty much every module especially when it comes to the blog page, the forum, they have these default layouts which just make it seem so clunky. If there exists a way to have every modules as a hide or show function but like in a drop down menu instead of displaying it as tabs, it would be extremely streamlined and it would seem so user responsive, which is a theme I really like. I love the fact I can change column designs in 3.0 per page basis. Groups especially. Doesn't matter how I want to display content so long as it does display 2 column one page, 1 column another page, 3 column another page, sidebar another page. Yeah if 2.0 had this I'd cancel my 3 in a flash its the only reason I have it. What would make me lose my 2.0 or 3.0 is if I could change everything per module basis, css, code, functionality, language edits, additional modules per section, control what appears in sections and then control how modules displays per section, that is the kind of code I am looking for most directly. Give me this and the option to control how embedded content displays, you got a deal! It seems so simple.
